Apple News treibt Traffic. So viel, dass ein Macher gesagt hat:
Apple News has generated half of Vox.com’s daily traffic at times, according to a person familiar with Vox’s numbers. An executive at the website of a major TV network said Apple News has accounted for as much as 60% of traffic for some stories.
Noch verdienen die Publisher sehr wenig Geld damit. Die Monetarisierung ist noch nicht da:
Slate calculated it makes more from an article on Slate.com that generates 50,000 pageviews than it does from Slate’s 6 million pageviews on Apple News.
Aber wie wählt Apple News die News aus, die in der App präsentiert werden?
Es gibt aber auch Podcasts, die aktives Zuhören verlangen. Wo man mitdenken muss, schnell sein, die Anspielungen und Gedankengänge verstehen. Recode Decode ist so einer, weil Podcast-Gastgeberin ihren roten Stuhl auch mal zum heißen Stuhl macht. Wenn wir jetzt davon rede, Facebook seien zu Waffen geworden („weaponizing social media“), dann liegt das meiner Meinung auch an ihrem Framing.
Ezra Klein ist der Gründer von Vox, und da er nicht mehr als Chefredakteur für die Organisation des Teams verantwortlich ist, hat er noch mehr Zeit für seinen Podcast, nehme ich an. The strange case of the $846 subscription offer to the Kansas City Star | Poynter:
Retiree Rob Black lives in an upscale but not wildly affluent suburb of Kansas City and has subscribed to The Kansas City Star since he moved to town in 1970. So it was a rude shock in July when he received a bill raising his renewal rate by 27 percent to $846.66 a year.
Surely that was a mistake, Black recalls telling the sales rep he reached by phone. Could he negotiate a lower rate? At least to the $600-something his neighbor was paying? No and no, the rep replied, and home delivery stopped within days.
It took some checking over a period of a month, but three sources confirmed to me that Black was on the receiving end of a peculiar new circulation strategy, which one called „reverse redlining.“
At the Star and 29 other McClatchy papers, longtime core subscribers, especially in higher income ZIP codes, are being hit with big renewal rate increases.
Some will cancel, the theory goes, but many will shrug and send in a check. So the practice works out to a net revenue gain for the company.
